How It Works

Scammers create professional-looking online stores with massive discounts. Ads on social media or search engines lead to websites offering popular items at unrealistically low prices. Payment is taken, but the product never arrives – or a cheap fake is sent. Customer support disappears, and the website may be taken down after collecting enough payments.

Red Flags

  • Prices far below market value – if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • No real contact info – missing physical address, phone number, or customer service details.
  • Recently registered domain – check with a WHOIS lookup if suspicious.
  • Only prepaid payment methods accepted (wire transfer, gift cards) with no credit card option.
  • No independent reviews – only testimonials on the site itself, which can be fabricated.

Protect Yourself

  • Shop only from known, reputable retailers or well-established marketplaces.
  • Check reviews on external sites before buying from an unfamiliar store.
  • Pay with credit cards which offer chargeback protection in case of fraud.
  • Be cautious with social media ads offering huge discounts – verify the store independently.
  • Look for secure payment indicators (HTTPS, padlock icon) though note these alone don't guarantee legitimacy.

What To Do If You've Been Scammed

  1. Contact your payment provider or credit card company to dispute the charge and request a chargeback.
  2. Document all evidence: order confirmations, emails, screenshots of the website.
  3. Report the website to consumer protection authorities and relevant platforms (Google, Facebook).
  4. Warn others by leaving reviews or sharing your experience.
  5. Monitor your accounts for identity theft if you shared personal information on the fake site.
